The Animal Air Transportation Rules

To send a pet by air flight, it is necessary to provide a set of accompanying documents, have a carrier of appropriate dimensions, and make some preparations before the departure.

The documents necessary for the transportation across Russia and to the countries of the Eurasian Customs Union:

• The Veterinary Certificate (Form No. 1). It is considered valid for 5 days from the issue date and issued only in the name of the sender of freight. For the EACU countries, the relevant document is the Eurasian Customs Union Veterinary Certificate (Form No. 1).
• A pet passport. It must be of the international standard if a flight is planned abroad.

The documents necessary for a flight abroad:

• The Veterinary Certificate (Form No. 1). It is considered valid for 5 days from the issue date and issued only in the name of the sender of freight. For the EACU countries, the relevant document is the Eurasian Customs Union Veterinary Certificate (Form No. 1).
• A pet passport of the international standard.
• The EU Animal Health Certificate for the transportation to EU countries.
• A passenger customs declaration in 2 copies if the sender of freight and the consignee are identical.
• The passport of the sender of freight.
• A xerocopy of the passport’s main page and the page with the information about registration by place of residence.

How to prepare a pet physiologically:

• Make sure that all the mandatory vaccinations are done in advance.
• It is better not to give it food less than 2 hours before the departure and water less than 1 hour before the flight.
• It is better not to give it sedatives without a particular recommendation from the veterinarian.
• Try out the carrier at home in advance, let the animal gets used to it, and put its favorite toy inside, if possible.
• To ensure cleanness during the flight, prepare extra moisture-absorbing pads.

The Animals Allowed for the Transportation

The transportation is accomplished in a baggage compartment of an aircraft as an air cargo transportation (for large specimens).

Thus, for the transportation in the cabin, the total weight of an animal together with a carrier should not exceed 8 kg, whereas there are no restrictions for the transportation in a baggage compartment, provided you order an air cargo transportation.

Brachycephalic dogs (pugs, Pekingese, Shar-Peis, English and French bulldogs) are accepted for air transportation under no circumstances since they can hardly tolerate pressure drops during a flight. Test and sick animals are also not allowed to be transported by air.
